This is a photo of a strange phenomenon I witnessed on the Great Salt Lake while visiting Antelope Island State Park in Northern Utah, USA in spring of 2015. The lake is a unique place where I often am amazed by what Nature can do. I was walking along the rocky shore of the lake when I noticed a thin line of foam along the shoreline. The wind shifted and blew the line of foam East. The line of foam hit some rocks and began to coil up into this spiral. It took about 30 minutes to reach this state. I was the only one on the beach and as far as I know, the only one with a photo of this phenomenon.
Foam is often created on the Great Salt Lake due to the naturally occurring surfactants in the lake which lowers the surface tension of the water. The source of these surfactants is the high amount of phytoplankton algae that lives in the lake. This causes bubbles that are created from waves to rise to the surface but do not pop. Instead they stretch and form together in clumps that can line the shore. The Great Salt Lake is a pretty remarkable lake.
